Snowflake and NVIDIA: Development of AI Applications

Snowflake and NVIDIA have joined forces to offer businesses the opportunity to create personalized generative AI applications using their own proprietary data securely within the Snowflake Data Cloud. This collaboration, announced at Snowflake Summit 2023, leverages the power of the NVIDIA NeMo platform and GPU-accelerated computing to enable enterprises to develop large language models (LLMs) for advanced generative AI services, including chatbots, search, and summarization. By customizing LLMs without the need to transfer data, Snowflake ensures that proprietary information remains fully protected within its platform.

Frank Slootman, Chairman and CEO of Snowflake, expressed excitement about the partnership, stating that it will introduce high-performance machine learning and artificial intelligence to Snowflake's vast volumes of proprietary and structured enterprise data. This collaboration aims to deliver unparalleled insights, predictions, and prescriptions to the global business landscape. Jensen Huang, Founder, and CEO of NVIDIA, emphasized the importance of data in creating generative AI applications that can comprehend the intricate workings and distinctive characteristics of each company. Together, the companies aim to build an AI factory that empowers enterprises to convert their valuable data into custom generative AI models directly from the cloud platform they utilize for their operations.

This alliance between NVIDIA and Snowflake presents enterprises with a remarkable opportunity. It enables them to leverage their proprietary data, ranging from hundreds of terabytes to petabytes of raw and curated business information, to construct and fine-tune custom LLMs that drive industry-specific applications and services. Through the integration of AI technology from Snowflake and NVIDIA, customers gain the ability to swiftly develop, deploy, and manage customized applications, effectively harnessing the power of generative AI across various use cases. Additionally, expanding AI capabilities within the Data Cloud allows customers to create generative AI applications within their governed data, reducing costs and latency while preserving data security.

Alexander Harrowell, Principal Analyst for Advanced Computing for AI at technology research group Omdia, noted that more enterprises are now training or fine-tuning their AI models as they recognize the value of their data assets. As a result, enterprises are deploying increasingly diverse fleets of AI models for business-specific applications, making support for this trend a significant opportunity in the sector.

The Snowflake Data Cloud, with over 8,000 customers globally, provides enterprises with the means to unify, integrate, analyze, and share data throughout their organizations and with external stakeholders. Moreover, customers can create and share cutting-edge data applications at scale through the Data Cloud. Snowflake's unified platform also offers industry-specific Data Clouds catering to multiple verticals, including advertising, media and entertainment, financial services, healthcare and life sciences, manufacturing, retail and consumer-packaged goods, and technology and telecom. Recently, Snowflake unveiled the Government and Education Data Cloud, enabling data-driven decision-making for the public sector.

The collaboration between Snowflake and NVIDIA will facilitate the transformation of these industries by bringing customized generative AI applications to various verticals within the Data Cloud. For instance, a healthcare insurance model could provide answers to complex questions about covered procedures under different plans, while a financial services model could offer specific details about lending opportunities for retail and business customers based on individual circumstances.

NVIDIA NeMo, a cloud-native enterprise platform, enables the construction, customization, and deployment of generative AI models with billions of parameters. Snowflake plans to host and operate NeMo within the Data Cloud, empowering customers to build, customize, and deploy custom LLMs for generative AI applications such as chatbots and intelligent search. With the NeMo Guardrails software, developers can ensure that their applications align with business-specific topics, safety requirements, and security standards.
